Your Fate if you Wait

"If you wait, all that happens is that you get older."
 - Mario Andretti

I'll do it tomorrow.

I'll wait until the kids are all in school.

I'll start on Monday.

I'll start on January 1.

Any of these sound familiar?

All of them rang a bell with me!

Procrastination is one thing.

But this is a slightly larger conversation.

Some people believe in fate.

Now "fate" is a rather large word.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "fate" as follows"

Noun:
The development of events outside a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power.
Verb:
Be destined to happen, turn out, or act in a particular way: "it was fated to end badly".

What I want to focus on here is the belief that things that happen to us are "beyond a person's control".

I think this is a cop out.

And no, I don't mean a cop out for a snack peeps!

It is a simple, neat and tidy way to make an excuse for something that has happened that you could, in fact, done something about.

People wait for fate.

I don't know who this Jon dude is, but he apparently is waiting for fate and he does not look too happy.

And that peeps, will not get you very far in life.

Now I am not saying that I don't believe in fate as a whole.

There are some things that are, in fact, out of our control. These are the things that we should not spend our time worrying about. These are things that I, in fact, worry about way too much.

The famous "What if?"
Fagedaboutit!

I worry that someone I love may get in a accident even though I take every realistic precaution not to let that happen without bubble-wrapping all of my loved ones up and locking them in a room.

I worry that my loved ones may get sick. Really sick.

Now if they do things that take them to a place that is a higher risk factor place for a particular illness (like smoking or eating constant crap or drinking way too much, etc), then that is worrisome...but not beyond their control. Perhaps beyond mine...but I would do what I could to talk to them about my worries. Especially my children of course.

Most adults know when they are doing something that is not healthy. I even do some things. And I know people worry about it. But I know if anything I do is serious enough that it makes me really sick...well...that is not about fate.

That is about my own damned fault.

Some people wait for good things to happen to them.

They wait to meet the soul mate fate will bring them.

That ain't gonna get ya too far hon.

They wait for fate to advance them in their careers or bring them to the work they are meant to be doing.

Ya gotta cross that road instead of staring at it girlfriend!

Well...again, I think this is a sorry excuse for being lazy.

OK. He's allowed. He's 3 months old peeps!

Ya gotta get up, be brave and take action.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaction!"

Worry about the things you CAN do something about.

Then let fate take care of the rest.

Smiles,

Lora

  1. I think another component with fate is what we do ourselves.I am a firm believer in being positive and upbeat most of the time and amazingly it bounches back in the interactions I have.
Also be open to opportunities when they arise even if it takes you out of your comfort zone.
You are the perfect example cheering me on my when I started my blog in Jan.I have taken some leaps with trying new things building it and it has been wonderful!

  2. Love your post... I have however a different take on fate... I don't like when 'fate' is used so loosely..and I think that we 100% influence what happens to us in our lives..however on a larger scale I feel that fate is a story that's already planned for us in a way... and the way we behave/act etc will edit the story/fate...ok..I'm not making sense... it's time for bed... thanks for such a thought inducing blog!
